What’s cool to me is seeing some of the same sights I’ve seen from the air, but much, much faster.

I would have had a great view from where we used to live. Of course, it was 25 years ago that we lived there. We drove through that area a few years ago and the place was barely recognizable. Back then there wasn’t much development outside of Beltway 8.

When we lived there, development was really cranking up along the 290 corridor. We were close to the outer edge (290 & Jones Rd.) but there were some HUGE developments coming online further NW of us.

I can see my (former) house (apartment)!

The fish eye makes that super confusing though, since the north/south road in fron t of my apartment is at a greater than 90 degree angle with the north/south road (Kirby) in front of the Reliant/NRG/whatever, which should be parallel:

That point in the video is also where Bill O’Brien saw the jets and thought, “Could I trade this flyover for a 2023 7th round draft pick?”

It was pretty cool to see.  I was at 90 and 59 on top of a parking garage in Sugar Land.  It was such a clear day that we could visibly track them as soon as they left downtown and made the loop around the Med Center.

I think they only fly at around 200 knots when they do demonstrations.

We lucked out last Saturday when we went on a motorcycle ride with a small group. I planned the route, sent everyone the itinerary the morning before , and then five minutes later, the flight plan was released.

I sent a follow up email, with an overlay of our route, and said if you look to the north at around noon (highlighted area) , we might see some airplanes.

We were on two-lane back roads for that bit, so I would be surprised if we saw anything. Maybe a glimpse? Maybe we would hear them?

Nope, LOL. Perfect intercept in a clearing.  We crossed right underneath them. Couldn’t have planned this if I tried.

That’s ~75 kts faster than the cruise speed in the Cherokee 140. :)

Well, they are traveling pretty fast. One long stop light and you would have missed them!

I’m using an app on my phone that tells me what’s flying overhead. Flightradar24. Not all general aviation traffic squawks, but of the ones that do, it’s interesting to see who the big bois are, like the V-tail Bonanza that’s pulling 180 mph, for example. Or who they aren’t, like the Cirrus twin that’s doing 140. Personally, I have a thing for turboprops...

I know, I know. :) That’s why it was perfect. One stop light, one slow truck, one of us having to run back inside and get a jacket before we leave, etc..

All seven of the others along for the ride complemented me all day for planning it perfectly. I just said “No, t hanks to you guys for being ready so we could leave on time!”

I have no idea what time we left. I was shooting for 11, but it could have been 11:15, I don’t know, but I let it ride.

I’ve been known to use it! https://oppositelock.kinja.com/flying-weekend-1834188630

That’s my long solo cross-country flight. I requested flight following, so they tracked me all the way to Tyler and back. It’s amazing that I was in radio contact with Houston until I was half an hour out of Tyler, then they handed me off to Fort Worth until I was 10 miles out from TYR.

That two-hour flight north was about an hour and half on the way back - including a landing at Hunstville.
